Seasons Greetings, typically means GAME ON when it comes to unhealthy foods, from glazed to smoked, to cured and sweetened – of course, all like nana used to make it. Our cholesterol goes through the roof – as do our waistlines.
So where is the list of ‘watch outs’ when it comes to the foods most likely to be adorning the tables of all and sundry reading this blog, avoid where possible, minimise exposure at worst and you will see into the new year without needing a ‘new years resolution’ again about watching what you eat, getting fit etc. [/nextpage]

1. Glazed Ham

If you are looking for a way to get salt into your system, Glazed Ham is it. Packed with sodium, sugar glaze you really are getting started on a meal that will capture the eyes, mouths, stomachs and most definitely the hearts – literally and metaphorically of your guests. Options are looking at a slow cooker or pressure cooker option without the glaze, but sorry to say that we know that taste good, but you are not doing too many favors for your health.

2. Gravy

Again, another fat and sodium overload. So it doesn’t really matter if you have chosen the turkey over the ham, due to the sodium and sugar content, if you are going to tip gravy all over it, it will be filled with sodium (clog your arteries) Fat (that waistline) and sugar (again the waste line), maybe settle for some mustard or nothing at all?

3. Gingerbread Men

These little guys pack an almighty punch with 160 calories in the smaller ones and 360 in the larger you may as well tuck into a McDonald’s Big Mac with 275 calories, at least you get some lettuce. Sure they are fun for the kids, but cut back to 1 per child…and adult for that matter.

4. Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha

Although Starbucks says it is festive, it is festively unhealthy. Filled with cream, sugar, fat, sodium you get the perfect drink if you are trying to put on pounds and feel sluggish. If you want a coffee, have a black coffee or a short back, if you want some ice-cream, have some – just keep your distance from the Peppermint white chocolate mocha.

5. Egg Nog

600 calories, 5 teaspoons of sugar, is there little wonder this is one of the holiday favorites and is keeping cardiologists BMW’s turning over year after year? Although it may be a tradition, you may as well have a can of coke, it has ¼ the number of calories!

6. Cheese Fondue

Ok, this image really is hard to take. Healthy, perfectly cooked vegetables, presumably steamed and ready to provide nutrients for your body to thrive on, and then the cheese! Really? Ok, so it tastes pretty good, but this will leave your insides screaming for days. You can only get out what you put into that chaise of yours, so choose wisely and don’t adulterate the veggies with calories, fat and salt…just leave them alone.

7. Rust Remover

Yep, you heard it right, the favorite of golfers around the world to clean the rust back on their golf clubs – so imagine what it does to your insides. With each can containing 39 grams of sugar, which is about 9 & ¾ teaspoons is there any wonder that you love the feeling once you drink a glass? Swap it for water, even mineral water, add some lemon juice or even a dash of lemon cordial and you are on your way to a healthier Christmas.
